Bella Hadid has revealed she suffered from ‘serious depression’ last year which she thinks stemmed from her time in high school.
The 21-year-old supermodel told InStyle on Thursday that she was bullied about her appearance while growing.
But she believes that the difficult experience makes her sympathetic to haters because she knows there must be something else going on in their lives.
‘I’ve learned that people are going to hate you and there’s nothing you can do about it except be yourself and love yourself,’ she said.
‘We all have our stuff to overcome, and that’s what I want to preach to the kids these days. I went through a serious depression last year, and I think it stemmed from when I was younger and [being bullied by] the kids in school.’
Speaking about her adolescent years, Bella said she was always self-conscious of her ‘big hips’ and was jealous of elder sister Gigi’s athletic build.
‘I had a small waist and big hips and was kind of chubby,’ she confessed.
‘I love them now, but I was always self-conscious of my hips – whereas my sister had a six-pack and was very athletic. And I thought I had a weird face. I remember very distinctively getting bullied because of my features.’
Speaking to aspiring models on her mother Yolanda’s TV show Making A Model earlier in the year, Bella revealed she used to black out and endure serious panic attacks at the start of her career after always being compared to Gigi.
